OWL-Web

OWL-Web

Summary: OWL is a very nice, basic protein sequence database if you have just started learning about protein sequences or do not require large amounts of details in response to your queries. However, if you need to find out more about an unidentified sequence, or wish to compare a sequence across species, you will not be able to obtain useful information here.

OWL is a non-redundant protein sequence database that combines information from Swiss-Prot, PIR, GenBank translations, and NRL-3D. It is a very simply compilation of information from many sources, and prides itself on not bringing back duplicate entries, as often happens when multiple shared databases are searched at the same time.

Searching OWL is extremely simple, although you cannot search on much more than a few words (such as species name or the type of protein that you are looking for). If you are looking for very specific protein sequence information, you might find this difficult to work around, as you cannot sort through the information as easily as you could with another sequence database.

Submitting sequences directly to OWL is not possible, as all of its information is garnered from other databases.
