General Medicine Sites
- Achoo -
A very large Yahoo-style database of medical Web sites. Information is indexed
in many ways. There are links to many medical sites and health care
newsgroups. On-line news pages contain links to the electronic journals. The
search engine will be a valuable tool. However, if one has the time,
investigating this site leads to a wealth of information. This resource will
allow a doctor (or patient) to keep up with current developments in his/her
medical field of interest.
- Argus Clearinghouse for Subject-Oriented Internet Resource Guides: Health and Medicine -
This subsection of the Argus Clearinghouse is a huge, alphabetized list of
links to brief ratings/reviews of medical Web sites. Most sites seem to be
aimed at patients/interested laypersons, but others seem specifically geared
toward biomedical researchers. The whole Clearinghouse is keyword-searchable.
- Jonathan Tward's
Multimedia Medical Reference Library -
This frames-based site provides a plethora of medical information resources for
professionals, students, and patients. It includes links to curricula,

databases, and over 9,950 movies.
- ABMS Certified Doctor -
The Certified Doctor Search and Verification Services allow one to locate and
verify the board certification status of physicians certified by one or more of
24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. These lists do
not include all of the physicians who are certified by the ABMS, however a
verification service is available for this purpose as well. Doctors can be
searched by name, specialty and proximity to a given geographic location.
- MedicineNet -
MedicineNet is a repository of information for the medically interested as an
educational tool. The site features medical news, information on diseases and
treatments, and information about pharmaceuticals and clinical trials.
- Primary Care
Teaching Modules -
This site was developed by he Divisions of General Internal Medicine at
Stanford University and the University of California at San Francisco. A neat
resource for medical students and physicians alike. Covers everything from
"Immunization in Adults" to "How to Give Bad News." Includes quizzes, clinical
cases and academic reviews.
- The Emergency Medicine and Primary Care
Home Page -
The site consists of a number of links to other medical related site and
provides opportunities for interaction between doctors in a number of
forums. There are also a large number of medical images (x-rays, CT scans,
etc.) that are used in interactive teaching and diagnostic exercises. The site
is primarily for professionals, however, anyone with an interest in medical
imaging could also benefit from this site.
- Medscape -
This easy-to-navigate site is packed with information. Whether you are looking
for an abstract on cancer, cardiology, or just new ideas on care giving, this
site is the place to go. Not only is this site good for the clinical aspect, it
is loaded with research information. This site contains links to several
journals. American Heart Journal, The AIDS Reader, and
Hippocrates are just a few examples of the publications found linked at
this site.
- Reuters Health Information
Services -
Free and relatively painless registration allows access to news stories about
medicine, health, and science; other interesting features include the
Internist's Casebook which encourages you to "try your hand at diagnosis",
thoughtful reviews (with ratings) of Internet sites, and humorous feature
articles from the Journal of Irreproducible Results.
- Interactive Patient -
This teaching tool from Marshall University School of Medicine is aimed at
physicians, residents and medical students. It offers a case with a chief
complaint to the user who then has to interact with the patient requesting
additional history, performing a virtual physical exam, and reviewing
laboratory data and x-rays. The site also features a detailed help page.
- NetMedicine -
An excellent source for health and medical information. Sections include Free
Medline, a CyberPatient Simulator, MedFinder Web Search, PhotoRounds Challenge,
EKG of the Month, Radiology Rounds, Pediatric Topics, Patient Education Center,
and Practice Opportunities. The site is free, but you must register first.
- Stanford MedWorld -
This site, created and maintained by medical students and residents at Stanford
Medical School is well maintained and well designed. It provides useful links
to various online medical journals as well as links to lesser known medical
resources. For those interested in audio information the site also provides a
link to the radio show DocTalk which can be heard via Real Audio. The site also
provides articles on various topics and a forum for discussion.

medical education, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, respiratory medicine,
and rheumatology.
- Quackwatch -
This site is dedicated to educating the public about medical quackery. It
includes articles on common health scams, bogus treatments, fads, and unethical
behaviors. You may not agree with everything Dr. Barrett has to say, but this
site is thoughtful, thought-provoking, and an excellent counter to all the
dubious "alternative medicine" sites that have proliferated on the Web.
- The Medical Education Page
A good resource for pre-med students, doctors, and the health-concerned.
This site is maintained by a second-year med student
and has all kinds of links to FAQs, medical indices, medical courses and
schools, references materials, etc.
