Enzyme Databases

[EC Enzyme | Rebase]

EC Enzyme
http://www.gdb.org/Dan/proteins/ec-enzyme.html
Summary: The EC Enzyme database is the best resource for finding information about enzymes. It is thoroughly cross-referenced with the Swiss-Prot protein sequence database and the Online Medelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) human gene disorders catalog. Although the search tool is very general and updates are infrequent at best, the amount of information contained in each entry is both plentiful and useful.
Each EC Enzyme entry consists of a vast amount of information about a particular enzyme. Besides standard names, catalytic activity, and cofactors required by the enzyme, the listing also includes non-conventional names and a short list of diseases known to be caused at least in part by the deficiency of the enzyme. Direct links to the enzyme's Swiss-Prot protein sequence are provided, as well as links to OMIM's entries for the related diseases. More information about the specific lines and entries can be found at the EC Enzyme User Manual.
Searching EC Enzyme is not complicated in the least...in fact, it may be a bit over-simplified. It is simply a one-field entry (your browser must support forms) into which you can enter the name(s) and/or characteristics of the enzyme you are looking for. Be prepared to wait -- the database will bring up every entry that corresponds to your search, although they are listed with the closest match first.

REBASE: The Restriction Enzyme Database
http://www.neb.com/rebase/rebase.html
Summary: The REBASE restriction enzyme database contains valuable information about specific restriction enzymes. The literature references included with each entry provide for easy continued research. An additional reference tool also makes for easy cross-referencing and further information gathering. Be aware, however, that the entries in the database are very specific, and it may be difficult to locate information about particular enzymes.
Searching REBASE is simple. There is a one-field entry for an enzyme-name search. A sample entry is also included. Further down you can also search through just the references of each entry for particular articles or authors if you are gathering research about a specific topic.
