Online Bioinformatics Courses

The development of bioinformatics courses is still in its infancy. Only a few universities around the world offer courses specifically designed for this field. Following are the few online courses in bioinformatics currently accessible, two of which represent hypertext editions of university courses.

Algorithms for Molecular Biology
An archive containing material from the course "Algorithms for Molecular Biology," taught in Fall 1994 and Fall 1995 classes in the department of Computer Science of Tel Aviv University. Files are in postscript. The information available is not current, but is valuable, as it provides key concepts for the development of molecular biology algorithms.
Algorithms in Molecular Biology: CSE590BI
This course was taught in Winter 1996 by the University of Washington. Lecture notes are superbly organized and include references. Most of the lectures are finalized, while some are presented as drafts (although these are just as well written and organized as the others). This is one of the best, if not the best online course in bioinformatics available to date. An essential starting point for any interested in pursuing this career path. Files are in Adobe Acrobat and postscript formats. We recommend the former for its better visual quality.
Virtual School of Natural Sciences BioComputing Division (VSNS-BCD)
A hypertext coursebook in biocomputing. Topics covered include pairwise sequence alignments, networking, multiple alignment, molecular phylogenetics and genetic algorithms. While the information available is excellent, navigating pages is a bit troublesome and hypertext markup to enhance organization is minimal. Postscript copies of most of the information is available, but visual quality is reduced in these. A mirror at Baylor is available for those accessing from North America.
The Virtual School of Molecular Sciences
This British site offers online training in gene sequence analysis, protein sequence analysis, protein structure, structure-based drug design, combinatorial chemistry, and quantitative structure activity relationships. Registration is restricted to residents of the European community.
