Step by Step instructions for configuring a Browser

Configuring a Web browser such as Netscape or Mosaic is relatively simple. In this example of I used Netscape 1.1 for the Mac as the browser and the program RasMol as the viewer. This will allow the system to automatically view PDB files (chemical/x -pdb).

The first step is to choose "preferences" from the Main menu, then pick "helper applications". You should see a display similiar to the one below.

Pick "new" in order to add a new MIME type to the list

Enter the MIME type and subtype in the boxes as shown below

.

Tell Netscape to launch the application when it sees the right MIME type.

You may also need to check the box marked "file type." In this case, we want it to be text but for some programs there are many possibilities. If your browser does not rea d the file correctly the first time you may want to check.

If everything has gone right, you'll get a display similiar to the one below next time you click on a "PDB" file.

A Note to UNIX users:

If you're using a Unix machine with Xwindows, things are a little more complicated. I suggest you check out Henry Rzepa's instructions at http://www.ch.ic.ac.uk/che mical_mime_first.html
