  Not real databases, but well-constructed compendia of links to other sites.

• The World Wide Web Virtual Library: Botany
  Although the presentation may be a bit dry, the volume of information contained here is quite impressive.

• American Indian Ethnobotany Database
  A searchable database of foods, drugs, fibers, and dyes used by native Americans.

• Andean Botanical Information System (ABIS)
  Provides an attractive, easy-to-use database of information on plants from the Andean region of South America.

• Australian National Plant Photograph Collection
  The bulk of the collection consists of identified Australian plant species, but there are also a large number of environmental and conservation images.

• Carnivorous Plants Database
  Contains over three thousand entries of carnivorous plants. Includes images.

• Flora of China
  This site attempts to describe and document in English the diversity of species of flora found in China. These species compose about one-eighth of the world's total. In addition, botanical names, literature, geographical distribution inside and outside of China, and endemism status are available as an on-line checklist.

• Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases
  From Dr. James Duke and the Agricultural Research Service; includes searchable databases on plant ecological ranges, worldwide plant uses, Native American food plants and medicinal herbs, plant chemicals and more.

• Q'TAXA
  The purpose of this site (available in Spanish and English) is to present the diversity of plant life in Mexico.

• USDA's Plants Database
  This page offers a huge database that lets you query for info on plants based on their common name, species name, or family name (so, unfortunately, you have to have an idea of what you're looking for before you can find it).

• Ethnobotany
  This page is from Genentech's Access Excellence Resource Center. An excellent resource for learning the basics of ethnobotany. Included are sections on plant nomenclature and other classroom subjects, as well as outlines of some of the more important contributions of ethnobotanists (mainly from the Americas) to our knowledge of tubers, common foods, and medicines.

Ethnobotany/Herb Sites

• The Ethnobotany Cafe
  This site includes bulletin boards for discussion and herb exchange as well as pages on the uses of mesquite beans and Native American herbal medicines.

• Henriette's Herbal Home Page
  Lots of herbal resources, including an extensive Medicinal Herb FAQ.

• Plants for a Future
  A resource and information center for edible/useful plants. Contains lots of online leaflets on plant use.

• Machiguenga: An Ethnobotanical Study of Eastern Peru
  In 1995, Dr. Ethan Russo, a neurologist, spent two months in Eastern Peru's rainforest looking for plants to treat headaches. You'll find photos of the plants he gathered here, along with botanical and medicinal information about them. You'll also find photos of birds, people and the rich forests of Peru.

Organizations

• Rainforest Medical Foundation
  This foundation is run by a group of physicians in the Netherlands who feel that the loss of the rainforest is also an enormous loss of resources for both western and non-western medicine. The site includes an online newsletter and an excellent page of links to other resources.

• Raintree Group Home Page
  This site supports the preservation of rainforests around the world by increasing awareness of sustainable uses of rainforest products. Includes information on rainforest preservation, medicinal plants, and more.

• Society for Economic Botany
  The Society for Economic Botany (SEB) was established in 1959 to foster and encourage scientific research, education, and related activities on the past, present, and future uses of plants, and the relationship between plants and people.

• Southwest School of Botanical Medicine
  Whether or not the School of Botanical Medicine is totally based in legitimate science is open to debate, but one can certainly find some excellent medicinal botany resources at this site. You'll find hundreds of images of medicinal plants (indexed alphabetically by genus), all manner of plant illustrations and engraving, classic herbal monographs, extensive herbal manuals (available as plain text and as Acrobat PDF documents), research abstracts, and assorted FAQs and plant checklists. There's a huge amount of information here.

• University of Washington Medicinal Herb Garden Home Page
  An excellent site for the amateur botanist. The site consists mostly of photographs of the various medicinal plants indexed by botanical and common names. Each of the plants has its own page with links to further information about its range and medicinal uses. The site includes a map of the garden and a virtual walk through tour.

• Herb, Spice and Medicinal Plant Digest
  This publication offers articles on the production, chemistry, and marketing of herbs, spices, and medicinal plants. The site offers selected articles from back issues, links, and subscription information.

• The Herbal Minefield
  An interesting and well-researched warning against the use of unproven herbal remedies.

• Oakleaf Online
  This free newsletter is produced by the Connecticut Unit of the Herb Society of America.

• Promising Phytomedicinals
  Another from James A. Duke. Lots of great information and thought on medicinal plants.

Software

• Biosys Software Reviews
  This must-visit site contains brief reviews of and links to over 150 biological software packages.

• NAPIS Lite
  This site provides access and information for the NAPIS Lite software, a tool for mapping natural products by organism, structure, chemistry and bioactivity relationships. These data sets are coupled with geographical information system (GIS) technology, to link library, laboratory and field research. Aside from mapped data, the program provides photographs of specimens and "comprehensive information handling", for potentially greater efficiency in the drug discovery process. Once one has completed a simple form, one can download the NAPIS Lite software (8.7 MB, for Windows 95 or Windows NT), with a sample data set (1.6 MB) and taxonomical data (13.8 MB).

  This site provides good information for cancer patients who want to start researching their diseases on their own.

• CancerNet
  This site from the National Cancer Institute offers information for patients, researchers, and health professionals. It is particularly useful as a source of information on clinical trials for new cancer treatments.
